Prerequisites:

-     Technology skills.

o   Word processing

o   Printing

o   Hyperlinking

-     Knowledge of The Center for Civic Education, We the People, Project Citizen, and the concept of a portfolio.

-     A public policy issue selected by the individual groups.

-     A two inch notebook filled with research on subject.

Course Description:

Learning how to and then writing the persuasive essay are the themes of these lessons.  The essays address public policies.  Specific topics of the four essays are the problem, alternative policies, class policy, and action plan. Answering questions about the topics is the tool in guided writing.

After completing the lessons, the scholars (Grades 5 to Adult) will have four completed essays to support their Project Citizen portfolio.

Printed Texts:

Grades 5 through 8: Project Citizen Level 1

Grades 9 through adult: Project Citizen Level 2

For all essays:

-     One inch margins top, bottom, left, and right

-     Double spaced

-     Twelve point New Times Roman font

For essays 1, 2, and 3: No more than two pages.

For essay 4: No more than one page.
